*TRUE STORY *

'One more bite and I am going.'

I remember I was in the car with my dad, mom, my sister Daiana and my brother Justin. I am not quite sure about my age but, I think Justin was about four years old. We drove to Metro, a hypermarket, to buy this and that.
Once we got there, my dad parked the car and we all went to eat something at McDonald's. I remember I was crazy about this restaurant and I think I will always be. My dad took Justin with him and they both went and sat at a table next to the window in front of the main door of the restaurant. After my sister, my mom and I ordered and took the trays with the food we went and sat at the table. Everyone started to eat. My mom was feeding Justin because he was so hyperactive he was running from a table to another.
I was enjoying my Big Mac and my fries while Justin was at the main door. He was looking at a girl that she just went out of the restaurant and she was looking at my brother. Apparently, the little girl was with two or three years older than my brother. She was holding the door open in order for Justin to go either out or in the restaurant. Justin was very cute and shy. He was looking and smiling at her and she was holding her tray in her left hand and with the right hand she was holding the door. She was smiling at Justin. My brother was inside the restaurant and leaning against the door. With his left hand thumb in his mouth and the other hand between the door and the door frame.
My whole family was looking at them two. My mom said to dad, that Justin could crash his fingers between the door frame and the door and that one of us should stand up and get Justin. We were still watching Justin and the girl.
'Cristiana go and bring Justin here'. Said my father.
'I am eating.' Daiana stood up and went to the till to bring the drinks at the table.
'Cristiana go and pick up Justin.' My father insisted.
'Alright. One more bite and I am going.' I said. By the time I bit from the burger, the girl turned to her left because her mother called her and she ran to her mother. I couldn't believe my eyes. The door closed on Justin's fingers. He did not feel a thing. He tried to come towards us and he couldn't because he was stuck. Once he moved he felt the pain. Daiana ran and opened the door and my mother ran and took Justin in her arms. Justin was crying like never before.
I felt like throwing up when I saw my brother in pain. I couldn't feel the ground below my feet. All that I could hear was Justin in pain. My father ran to the car and we all drove to the hospital.  I will never forget this awful experience and since then I feel so responsible for my brother.  When we got to the hospital Justin was taken to the emergency room. He was there for an hour or so. I was outside on the corridor among other patients, with my sister and my dad. I felt terrible I was crying like I never cried before. My mom came out with Justin and he was smiling but his eyes were red of crying. I felt even worst. I didn't have the power to hold my little brother because I was in a terrible pain, my soul was disgusted with my behavior. I felt so heavy and so ugly. Justin wanted me  to hold him in my arms. I was lost, I hated myself. Once I make a gesture to take him in my arms I saw his arm in gypsum. I thought I should die. He was so fragile, such a nice, cute, shy, polite, innocent, smart child and what have I done ?

This is one of my many powerful events from my childhood, which will always hunt me.
